20 Best Actor – Director Combinations in World Cinema
5. Paul Thomas Anderson – Philip Seymour Hoffman
Noted: Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk Love, The Master
Anderson being a talented director and Hoffman definitely being a versatile actor, this pair was a great hit. Hoffman first appeared in his film, Hard Eight, their next film Boogie Nights was an instant hit and this also caved opportunities for both of them. But suspicion was drawn when Hoffman wasn’t a part of There Will Be Blood(though basically because he didn’t fit the role). But it was made up for in their last film together, The Master was one of the best films of all times where Hoffman portrayed the role of the protagonist. Sadly, Hoffman passed away last year and we won’t see any of the pair anymore.
4. Woody Allen – Diane Keaton
Noted: Annie Hall, Love and Death, Manhattan
Though Allen directed 13 films altogether with Mia Farrow over their 12 year relationship, it falls back in glory and success of the 8 films he made with his sweet love Diana Keaton. Notably one of the romantic pairs both on and off screen, the duo made a terrific hit with romantic comedy films such as Annie Hall and Manhattan.
3. Martin Scorsese – Robert DeNiro
Noted: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The King of Comedy
Most would agree if I say that this is the best pair of all times as most of the films that this duo created together are considerably some of the historic films of times-and not just us, but all the awards say too. They set off on the perfect foot with Mean Streets in 1973, and the success has kept them together over two decades. This collaboration has been nominated for over a dozen of Academy Awards and also some were bagged home.
2. Quentin Tarantino – Samuel L. Jackson
Noted: Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Vol 2
Tarantino is the father of cult and Jackson is his powerful weapon to give it a dark grunge feel. Apart from working as an actor/director combo, they are also related by other movies like True Romance. But, the first cut was the legendary work in Pulp Fiction, the film which took both Tarantino and Jackson to new heights. The pair has ever since worked together in many ventures together and will also be seen in a brand new film, Hateful Eight.
1. Wes Anderson – Bill Murray
Noted: The Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Rushmore
Wes Anderson makes some of the most vivid, lively and humorous films which demand someone with such a nature. When Anderson first signed Murray for Rushmore, maybe he didn’t even realize that the performance by Murray would seal the deal between them, as Murray continues to appear in every Anderson film ever since. This collaboration has worked so far and we expect more from them.
