The Rapper Arunav Deka popularly known as Deka
Arunav Deka is a rapper from Assam, being introduced to music at the age of twelve. His inquisitive nature pushed him to experiment with different styles of music with different instruments from Folk to Funk, Jazz to Math Rock. At the age of fifteen he got his hands on Music Production, that’s when he was introduced to the world of Hip-Hop. Staying true in his roots and believing in a deep connection with Indian Classical and folk music he spits his rhymes with Konnokol and Assamese folk phrases.
Deka is also a composer and social media activist. Aside from that, he is also a skilled cinematographer and video editor. His primary focus is music, and he has had opportunities to work with artists around the globe and has built professional relationships with some of the giants in the international Industry such as Ricardo Vogt (5-time Grammy nominee and a Grammy award winner), Marcelo Woloski (Latin Grammy Award winner), Veronica Nunes (Brazilian Singer/ Songwriter), Ranjit Barot etc. and with some artists of national repute, such as Louiz Banks, Zakir Hussain, Taufiq Qureshi and Gino Banks.
In mid-2014, he started an online community called Just Another Being, which is aimed at building a community of people, who are unique in our differences but similar in passion; something that crosses cultures and backgrounds, by bridging the gap and inspiring each other to get better, and the community has been blessed and fortunate enough to have reached a global platform in less than a year. In January 2016, Deka along with Gino Banks organised the first ever international Drumset festival in India, Mumbai Drum Day. Deka has also developed marketing content for various international brands such as Harman & Kardon, Meinl Cymbals, Games the Shop, Konami, Mumbai City FC. He has produced several short films and has personally worked with artists such as Louiz Banks, AR Rahman, Ranjit Barot and have produced documentaries on them. He has also worked at the prestigious Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music as an online marketing video content developer, in which he was associated with GoPro cameras.
Apart from this, he has also been fortunate enough to have worked in studios of national acclaim like the Yash Raj Studios in 2014, and has also travelled to Jakarta, Indonesia to attend the Java Jazz Festival in 2015 to produce a short documentary on it for his channel. Arunav believes using art as a tool of expression to break boundaries and connect people from around the world. Early 2016, Deka set out on a venture to explore the northeast India and capture sounds for his upcoming album where he is fusing folk music with his urban rap vocabulary.
Deka is one of the few artist from India to have been selected for the International Jazz Day 2016 in India.
