Prarthana Choudhury’s Musical Journey Across The Ocean
On 17th June 1992- a six-year-old girl performed in an evening of classical music to commemorate late Hiren Sarma and surprised the audience by the accurate rendering of the intricacies of Raag Behag; thereafter, she sang a Meera Bhajan that easily made its way to the audience’s hearts. The same girl Prarthana Choudhury performed in 2010 as one of the country’s top 10 finalists, on Zee TV, SONA BHAKTI KI AWAAZ and was appreciated by stalwarts of the likes of Jagjit Singh, Anup Jalota, Sudha Malhotra and Kailash Kher. In February, this year (2015) she performed at Muscat(Oman) in a function organized by SPANDANA, a South Indian cultural organization of Muscat, in association with Majan Events. As an artist from Mumbai she enthralled the crowd with her unique concoction of Ghazals, Hindi songs and a dash of ‘Bihu’, also singing the female part in a Kannada duet number! In 2013, she performed as a Guest Artist at the 34th Assam Convention in the US held at Detroit. This was followed by her heart-stealing versatile performance at Houston organized by the Asomiya Samaj of Houston.
Prarthana is an approved artist of Asomiya Adhunik Geet at AIR Guwahati. She has performed in AIR Guwahati, DD Guwahati, PPC- North East, AIR Mumbai and DD Urdu. She has a number of solo audio and video albums of Assamese modern songs to her credit, and not to forget, an album of ‘Kamrupi Lokogeet’ as well! Prarthana has rendered her voice in some TV serials, Assamese albums and movies which include ‘Jil Mil Jonak’ which was released last year.
Prarthana’s Marathi video song recently launched on YouTube by Kalaman is fast gaining popularity. A Hindi song ‘Kaisi Khudgarzi’, based on the Rock music genre and penned, composed and sung by Prarthana herself has been taken up by Hungama.com and is available on i-tunes and Caller Tunes. Prarthana has also rendered a song for a yet-to-be-released Bollywood movie.
The 2002-03 ‘Best Singer of Cotton College’, Prarthana, achieved the College Color & Blazer Award of Hansraj College in 2006-07 as recognition for winning the maximum number of prizes for the college during the inter-college competitions at Delhi University. After completion of her graduation with Honours in English from Hans Raj College, University of Delhi, Prarthana got admission in Xavier’s Institute of Communication (XIC), Mumbai. After her post graduation in Public Relation & Corporate Communication from XIC, she has stayed put in Mumbai and is pursuing her music, sometimes shuffling between Guwahati and other locations for her performances.
Currently, Prarthana is busy wrapping up on her audio album of Assamese Modern Songs and a music-video which will be released shortly.
