SusCon VI concludes a remarkable success
The sixth edition of SusCon, the annual international conference on Sustainability organized by IIM Shillong, concluded here on Friday. The three-day conference was inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Shankar Venkateswaran, Chief of Tata Sustainability Group, and Padma Shri Jadav “Molai” Payeng on March 2nd, and was flagged off with a welcome address by Professor Sanjoy Mukherjee, SusCon chair. With ‘Learning, Living, and Leading’ as the central theme, this year’s edition hosted four plenary sessions in addition to several technical sessions on a wide array of topics like Green Marketing, CSR practices, and Micro-finance for Sustainability.
“Sustainability is not a cost, it is an investment,” said Mr. Venkateswaran, the Guest of Honor, while emphasizing the need for efficiently utilizing corporate resources to manage value chains. A host of dignitaries, including Dr. Varghese Manaloor, Chair Ecology, and Management, University of Alberta, Dr. A Patil, Head, Economics & Management Department at North Eastern Hill University among others graced the conference with their presence.
A total of 250 research papers were submitted, of which 80 were selected by the Selection Committee. Mr. Mohd. Hasanuzzaman walked with the Best Paper Presentation Award, while Mr. JunybirthSangma and Mr. Harish Kumar stood second and third respectively. The event also saw participation from a number of leading business across India, including SPJIMR, IIM Ranchi, and TAPMI. In the B-School category, BhavyaRastogi of IIM Shillong bagged the first prize, while Arnab Bhattacharya and Mahadeep Ray of IIM Ranchi stood second.
The valedictory function of the conference was presided over by Mr. Rajeev Arora, DGM, SBI Shillong, and concluded with a mesmerizing cultural program put up by indigenous artists, showcasing the cultural heritage and diversity of the seven sisters. The Chairman of SusCon Scientific Committee, Professor Tapas Kr. Giri offered a vote of thanks at the ceremony and expressed his gratitude to all the delegates, sponsors, committee chairpersons and student volunteers for making the event a success. State Bank of India, L&T, UCO Bank, and Oil India were the sponsors for the event.
The conference provided a multidisciplinary brainstorming platform for distinguished academicians, government officials, civil society groups, and corporate managers, and witnessed paper presentations that brought to life a multifaceted discourse on sustainability. Leveraging the unique expertise of IIM Shillong as a pioneer in the movement for Sustainability, provided an opportunity to question and challenge the existing beliefs and dogma, explore fresh perspectives and values, and evolve actionable practices for a better and ethically enlightened future.
Over the years, SusCon has advocated a balanced emphasis on global perspectives, national priorities, and regional challenges to ensure the harmonious development of the individual, the community, and the planet at large. SusCon at IIM Shillong is not just an annual conference – it is a movement to encompass sustainability in every aspect of life, business, and academics.
